Every month we’ll recognize the top performing jockey, trainer and horse for the month according to a totally arbitrary formula devised to award points for finishing in the money in graded stakes races.
Graded Stakes Points
Jockey of the Month: Julien Leparoux
Honorable Mention: Garrett Gomez
Garrett Gomez won this award the first three months of the year, but Julien Leparoux unseats him by picking up five victories in grades stakes this month. Leparoux also picked up five show finishes, but oddly, no places.
Gomez only won two graded stakes races this month, but also finished second twice and third six times.
Trainer of the Month: Jonathan Sheppard
Honorable mention: Bill Mott
Sheppard picked up 3 wins, along with a second and a third, in graded stakes this month highlighted by Informed Decision’s victory in the Grade 1 Vinery Madison and the successful return of Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf champion Forever Together in the Jenny Wiley.
Mott also won 3 graded stakes this month, along with a second and a third, highlighted by Mr. Sidney, a $3.9 million yearling in 2005, winning the Grade 1 Maker’s Mark Mile over the yielding turf at Keeneland.
Horse of the Month: Mr Napper Tandy (GB)
Honorable mention: I Want Revenge
On the strength of a second in the Grade 2 Arcadia and a victory in the Grade 2 San Francisco Mile, Mr Napper Tandy earns the award for April.
I Want Revenge, thanks to a patient and skillful ride by jockey Joe Talamo, gets the Honorable Mention for overcoming an awful break and a traffic jam in the stretch to score a Grade 1 victory in the Wood Memorial. Will he win the award for May too?
