Every month we’ll recognize the top performing jockey, trainer and horse for the month according to a totally arbitrary formula devised to award points for finishing in the money in graded stakes races.
Graded Stakes Points
Horse of the Month: Rachel Alexandra
Honorable Mention: Pyro
The long-legged lass keeps on rolling along. Three-year-old filly Rachel Alexandra put a bow on her Horse of the Year campaign with a victory over older males in the Woodward Stakes at Saratoga Race Course this month. She finishes her year with seven graded stakes wins in seven starts, the last five being Grade 1’s and three of those against males. Oh, and she’s ThorougbredReport.com’s Horse of the Month for September. Not too shabby.
I couldn’t decide who to give the Honorable Mention to, but in the end I gave it to Pyro for his win in the Forego Stakes because I was there and have photos.
Jockey of the Month: Tyler Baze
Honorable mention: Garrett Gomez
Tyler Baze won two graded stakes races this month, and finished second four times, to earn Jockey of the Month honors for September. Baze’s wins came on Carlsbad in the Rancho Bernardo Handicap and Gotta Have Her in the Palomar Handicap, both at Del Mar.
Alan Garcia finished one point ahead of Garrett Gomez in the standings, but Gomez ended up with one more graded stakes win on the month by sweeping all three graded stakes on Kentucky Cup Day at Turfway Park and that’s enough to give him the Honorable Mention.
Trainer of the Month: Bob Baffert
Honorable mention: Steve Asmussen
Bob Baffert won four graded stakes races this month, including three more Grade 1’s (giving him eight on the year), to earn the Trainer of the Month award for September. His Grade 1 victories included a major upset with Richard’s Kid in the Pacific Classic, Zensational’s third Grade 1 win of the year in the Pat O’Brien Stakes and Lookin At Lucky in the Del Mar Futurity.
Steve Asmussen’s three graded stakes wins (and three shows) in September earn him the Honorable Mention. Not much doubt about his highlight of the month – Rachel Alexandra.
