Every month we’ll recognize the top performing jockey, trainer and horse for the month according to a totally arbitrary formula devised to award points for finishing in the money in graded stakes races.

Graded Stakes Points

Grade W P S
I 10 8 6
II 7 5 3
III 4 2 1

Horse of the Month:  Ventura

Honorable Mention:  The Usual Q. T.

Yeah, I know, there was that whole Breeders’ Cup thing this month and Ventura didn’t even win her race, but she followed up her second in the Filly and Mare Sprint with a win in the Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes, so she’s our Horse of the Month for November.

The Honorable Mention goes to The Usual Q. T. for winning both the Oak Tree Derby and the Hollywood Derby.

Jockey of the Month:  Garrett Gomez

Honorable mention:  Julien Leparoux

Garrett Gomez only won two graded stakes this month, but one of them was in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic and he also scored with four seconds and a third in other graded Breeders’ Cup races.

Julien Leparoux picks up the Honorable Mention for winning five graded stakes races this month including three graded Breeders’ Cup races.

Trainer of the Month:  Saeed bin Suroor

Honorable mention:  Todd Pletcher

Saeed bin Suroor continues to send out live runners and wins Trainer of the Month on the strength of two wins and three thirds in Grade 1 races this month (along with a win in a Grade 2).

Todd Pletcher has been racking up in-the-money finishes in graded stakes all year and this month added nine more, including three wins, a second and five thirds.

Friday 11/6 – Race 8 – Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (Distaff) – Mile and an eighth Pro-Ride

Careless Jewel – high cruising speed has let her win with ease and she’ll be hard to catch here too.
Life is Sweet – won a Grade 1 at this track at this distance, but seems to be in over her head against this bunch.
Mushka – was awarded Spinster win via DQ making her 2 for 2 over AWT.  closer will have a lot to do at the end.
Lethal Heat – should sit behind Careless Jewel and be in a position to pounce if that one falters.
Proviso – second tier Euro DQ’d from Spinster win for swerving in deep stretch.  Another closer.
Cocoa Beach – Godolphin runner may have been better last year.  Does seem to like the track and will like not seeing Zenyatta.
Music Note – this Goldophin runner is very sharp after big win in the Beldame.  3rd in this race last year.  will be tough.
Rainbow View – Legit Group 1 Euro runner making first attempt at AWT.  Should get a good position mid-pack.

Pace Scenario – Careless Jewel will try to wire them.  Lethal Heat, Music Note, Cocoa Beach and Rainbow View will sit behind her and try to reel her in down the stretch.

Win Picks – Careless Jewel

Other Win Contenders – Music Note, Rainbow View

Superfecta Possibles – Proviso, Mushka

Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint

Friday 11/6 – Race 7 – Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint- 7 furlongs Pro-Ride

Free Flying Soul – 3 for 3 on track, sharp workout last week, but never gone 7f.  seems way overmatched.
Sara Louise – improving 3yo from dangerous Godolphin barn.  no AWT experience, but been working regularly here since mid-Oct.
Game Face – very successful sprinter on dirt.  proven at distance, if not AWT surface.  notch below best in division.
Only Green – hard to imagine what Goldikova’s BFF is doing here.  has won lesser races over AWT and over soft turf at distance.
Silver Swallow – in way over her head here, but I suppose anyone can roll up for a piece of the super.
Evita Argentina – has won at track and distance, but closes from the clouds.  Should get up for a piece at the end.
Informed Decision – has won 5 of 6 at 7f and is 6 for 6 on AWT.  should sit a perfect trip and will be a force in the stretch.
Seventh Street – Another Godolphin runner, but this one looks to be a router not a sprinter.  but what do I know?
Ventura – won this race last year and looks plenty good enough to repeat.  Won’t have as much pace to close into as last year.

Pace Scenario – What happens in a sprint when no one wants the lead?  I guess it will fall to Game Face and Sara Louise to make the pace and one of them could try to get away.

Win Picks – Ventura

Other Win Contenders – Informed Decision, Sara Louise

Superfecta Possibles – Evita Argentina
