Horse of the Month
Ice Box was outrun early in the Grade 1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park but was content to trail the field of eleven into the stretch. The fast pace set by Pulsion and Rule turned out to be the perfect setup for the closer and the chestnut colt took full advantage by sweeping past the field in the stretch to just nip Pleasant Prince at the wire. This dramatic win in a major Kentucky Derby prep earns Ice Box the Horse of the Month Award for March.
Misremembered picks up the Honorable Mention for his gutty victory in the historic Big ‘Cap, the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap. Jockey Martin Garcia’s original plan was to take the lead early, but he wisely backed off the pace when Mast Track went out fast. Sitting second until the final turn, Misremembered edged to the lead and gamely held off the closers driving to the wire.
Jockey of the Month
Mike Smith earns the Jockey of the Month award primarily on the strength of two wins and a second in Grade 1 races in March. The wins came aboard Zenyatta in the Santa Margarita and Proviso in the Kilroe Mile.
Rafael Bejarano gets the Honorable Mention for two wins, two seconds and two thirds in graded stakes action this month. His wins were both in Grade 2 turf races at Santa Anita, the San Luis Rey Handicap (Bourbon Bay) and the Santa Ana Handicap (Tuscan Evening).
Trainer of the Month
Todd Pletcher continued his domination of the graded stakes scene (he won this award last month too) with five wins, two seconds and five thirds in March. Pletcher also unveiled yet another Kentucky Derby contender with Mission Impazible’s victory in the Louisiana Derby.
Jerry Hollendorfer won only one graded stakes race this month, the Grade 2 Santa Ana Handicap with Tuscan Evening, but he earns the Honorable Mention on the weight of a second and two thirds in Grade 1 competition.
