June 2010 Award Winners

June'10 Award Winner Honorable Mention
Horse of the Month Zenyatta Blame
Jockey of the Month John Velazquez Mike Smith
Trainer of the Month Todd Pletcher Bill Mott

Horse of the Month

There were some very nice Grade 1 races this month, but none were more dramatic than the Vanity Handicap at Hollywood Park.  After dropping back early, to her customary position at the back of the pack, Zenyatta bided her time until the top of the stretch where she swung out wide to circle the field and unleash her furious closing kick.  But fifty yards from the finish line, she looked to be in big trouble.  St Trinians had also dropped back early, but stayed closer to the leaders and that let her get the jump on Zenyatta as the field turned for home.  St Trinians grabbed the lead at the top of the stretch and was still looking strong driving to the wire.  Zenyatta, however, dug deep and found the strength to power up next to St Trinians and, a jump before the wire, surge a half length ahead.  For that, Zenyatta is our Horse of the Month for June.

The Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs provided another stirring finish as Blame closed strongly in deep stretch to reel in Battle Plan at the wire.  Blame could be a force in the handicap division later in the year, but for now he’ll have to settle for a nice win in the Foster and being this month’s Honorable Mention.

Jockey of the Month

John Velazquez brought home two Grade 1 winners this month, Devil May Care in the Mother Goose Stakes and Life At Ten in the Ogden Phipps Handicap, and just missed with Fly Down in the Belmont Stakes.  Throw in a Grade 2 victory aboard Lady Shakespeare in the New York Stakes and you have your Jockey of the Month for June.

I guess you could say Mike Smith had a nice month.  In addition to the win aboard Zenyatta in the Vanity, Smith won the Grade 1 Just A Game Stakes with Proviso and guided Drosselmeyer to victory in the Belmont Stakes.  That’s certainly a month worthy of an Honorable Mention.

Trainer of the Month

The runaway train that is Todd Pletcher rolled to its fifth straight Trainer of the Month Award with Grade 1 victories by Life At Ten in the Ogden Phipps and Devil May Care in the Mother Goose, a Grade 2 win with Bribon in the True North and two Grade 3 wins with Colizeo in the Northern Dancer and Caminadora in the Regret.  Three seconds and a third in other graded stakes races this month were just the cherry on top of another great month for Todd Pletcher.

Congratulations to Bill Mott for winning the Belmont Stakes with Drosselmeyer, his first victory in a Triple Crown race.  Mott also won the Grade 1 Just A Game Stakes with Proviso and added three runner-up finishes in graded stakes this month to earn the Honorable Mention.
