Hollywood announces slimmer stakes schedule
Hollywood Park, in an effort to protect overnight purses, has responded to the declining economy by shuffling its stakes calendar for the 60-day spring/summer meet, which begins April 21. [more]

Calder Casino & Race Course will host a "Road to the Kentucky Derby" promotion this spring. Fair Grounds slashes purses of three stakes
Fair Grounds will reduce the purses of three stakes races still to be run this season -- the Fair Grounds Oaks (G2), the Mervin H. Muniz Jr. Memorial H. (G2) and the New Orleans H. (G2) -- by $100,000 each, to $300,000. [more]

Arlington offers automatic berths for International Festival races

Oaklawn increases purses
Once again bucking national economic trends, Oaklawn Park has announced across-the-board purse increases of approximately $10,000 per day for the second half of its 54-day racing season. The increase of $500 in all claiming races and $2,000 in all allowance and maiden special weight races -- an approximate 5 percent hike -- went into effect on Thursday's program. [more]

Horse of the Year RACHEL ALEXANDRA (Medaglia d'Oro) breezed six furlongs in company Tuesday morning, blowing past her stablemate nearing the eighth-pole and finishing in a final quarter-mile of :22 3/5 to post an official final time of 1:13 3/5 over the fast track at Fair Grounds. She recorded fractions in :13, :25 3/5, :38 2/5, :51 and 1:02 1/5, and the four-year-old filly galloped out seven-eighths in 1:26 2/5 and one mile in 1:41 1/5. [more]

FLANDERS (Seeking the Gold), the champion juvenile filly of 1994 and the dam of 2000 champion three-year-old filly Surfside (Seattle Slew), was euthanized in mid-February due to complications from a paddock accident, according to various reports. She was 18. [more]

Compari dominates Crystal Water
John Nicolette, Harris Farms Inc. and Donald Valpredo's homebred COMPARI (Redattore [Brz]) put on a front-running display in Sunday's $100,000 Crystal Water H. at Santa Anita, grabbing command soon after the start and posting fractions of :23 3/5, :47 3/5, 1:11 3/5 and 1:23 1/5 en route to a 3 1/4-length victory under jockey Garrett Gomez.
